Notes from a Native, 1954, James Baldwin

 

취미 하나 있다

영어 교과서 읽기

1981하번이니까, 당시 출판되었던 대학 1하년 영어교과서는 참낡았다

본드로 헤진데를 풀칠도 하는데, 정이 많이 들었고

그리고 내가 남겼던 흔적들 때문에라도 버리기 어렵다

​

오늘은 우연히 보게된 29장, 일종의 수필이자 자서전적 소설일텐데

출발부터 참 을씨녀스럽게 암울한 배경에서 시작한다

가장 심한 인종차별 반란이 벌어지는 것과 비교적 무능력한 목사로서 아이들은 9명이나 낳았던 아버지가 돌아가시는 상황도 비교하면서 시작하는데

책 뒤에 볼드윈이 1924년생으로만 나왔길래, 이제 45년이 지났으니, 아마도라는 생각으로 위키피디어를 뒤져보니 1987년에 사망

좀더 나온 주석을 보니, 평생 흑인으로서 차별받는 상황에서 인권운동에 부득이 ㅎ하게 참여하게 되면서, 아마도 가장 신랄한 비판가로 자리잡았던 것 같다

 

그땐 아마도 뒤에도 배치되어 있었거니와, 교수님들이 또 마땅한 주제라고 생각하기 어려운 때라서 그랫는지, 그냥 지나간 장이었다. 그러니까 총 30장 중에서 실제로 중간고사와 기말고사에서 다뤘던, 3갠가 틀렸더니 그냥 C학점 맞았던 기억이 어렴풋 나는데,

그때는 정말 이 정도로 어려운 문장들은 아마도 시험준비했다면 자연스레 외우기도 했겠다 싶다 왜냐하면 어려울수록 외우는 경향이 있으니

그런데 그때는 화시히 수비지향적이었던 것 같다

그래서 지금과 같이 정말로 한참 전에 공부했던 것인데

이렇게 취미삼아 읽고는 한다

빛바랜 종이, 본드로 해젠부분 붙이면서

이게 뭔 취미인지 모르겟으나,

이건 어쩌면 자연스런 회귀의 감정 아니겟는가?

아버지로부터 그리도 어려운 시절을 어린시절을 보냈고

동생 7명을 감안해서 철도 노동자로 일찌기 나서던 볼드윈 작자

나중에 동성애 경향도 좀 느꼈던 모양이니, 엎친데 덮친격이리라

교과서에도 나오지만, 감히 물컵을 집어 던진 사건, 그것도 무척 조심스레 미안한 투로 말하는 여종업원에게 던진사건, 그 정황에서의 작가로서의 섬세한 디테일 기술에 대한 부분이 나온다.

이러니, 자연스럽게도 인권운동에 참여하게 되지 않겟나 ㅅㅍ다. 1940년대, 1960년대까지아마도 미국에서 흑인들이 겪었던 인종차별은 대단해썬 것 같다

Baldwin left school in 1941 in order to earn money to help support his family. He secured a job helping to build a United States Army depot in New Jersey.[54] In the middle of 1942, Emile Capouya helped Baldwin get a job laying tracks for the military in Belle Mead, New Jersey.[55] The two lived in Rocky Hill and commuted to Belle Mead.[55] In Belle Mead, Baldwin experienced prejudice that deeply frustrated and angered him and that he cited as the partial cause of his later emigration out of America.[56] Baldwin's fellow white workmen, who mostly came from the South, derided him for what they saw as his "uppity" ways, his sharp, ironic wit and his lack of "respect".[55]

In an incident that Baldwin described in his essay "Notes of a Native Son", he went to a restaurant in Princeton called the Balt where, after a long wait, Baldwin was told that "colored boys" were not served there.[55] Then, on his last night in New Jersey, in another incident also memorialized in "Notes of a Native Son", Baldwin and a friend went to a diner after a movie, only to be told that Black people were not served there.[57] Infuriated, he went to another restaurant, expecting to be denied service once again.[57] When that denial of service came, humiliation and rage overcame Baldwin and he hurled the nearest object at hand—a water mug—at the waitress, missing her and shattering the mirror behind her.[58] Baldwin and his friend narrowly escaped.[58]

During these years, Baldwin was torn between his desire to write and his need to provide for his family. He took a succession of menial jobs and feared that he was becoming like his stepfather, who had been unable to provide properly for his family.[59] Fired from the track-laying job, Baldwin returned to Harlem in June 1943 to live with his family after taking a meat-packing job.[58] He lost the meat-packing job too, after falling asleep at the plant.[22] He became listless and unstable, drifting from one odd job to the next.[60] Baldwin drank heavily and endured the first of his nervous breakdowns.[61]

또한 대체로 따라다니는 사실인데, 그 아버지는 사람들과 잘 사귈줄 모르는 사람이며 집에 와서도 자식들에게 냥 엄하기만 하고 대화도 할줄 모르는 사람으로

1943년 할렘가에서 큰 소요가 발생한 날이 장례일정과겹쳤고, 그리고 막내 동생이 태어난 것과 겹쳤고

참 불우한 생활을 어린 시절에 했었는데

한가지 백인 여성 교사의 배려로 연극공연을 같이 가서 보게 된것이 백인에 대한 애정을 유지하게 만든 계기가 되었고, 그리고 볼드윈의 극작가로서의 재질이 발휘되는 계기가 되었던 걱 같다

어쨋든 이렇듯 인간승리 비슷한 내용들은 격려를 주는 것 같고

이렇듯 좋은 내용드을 편찬한 대학 교수진에게도 공감도 보낸다. 하지만 이제는풍토가 참 많이도 바뀌었겠다만
